Welcome to the Newsletter

Welcome to the first Newsletter of the academic year from Durham University Student Energy Society (DUSES)! The Newsletter continues this year under the excellent stewardship of our new Editor-In-Chief, Saskia Pearl. In the two years since its inception, the newsletter has produced insightful and well-researched articles on topics spanning the energy sector, from emerging technologies and economic trends, to policy developments and political dynamics.

It is run entirely by students on a volunteer basis, carried forward by a talented team of writers, designers and editors. The consistent quality of its content is a testament to their hard work and passion for energy. In an increasingly challenging global landscape, a thorough understanding of such a crucial topic is more pressing than ever. I hope you enjoy reading, and make sure to follow us to stay up to date with all future editions.

Getting Involved with DUSES

For nine years, Durham Student Energy has been the voice of energy related issues amongst Durham’s student population. Evolving in our focus and scope over that time, the society today operates over three main channels. We host regular events with talks from external speakers coming from a range of areas across the energy industry, broadly with a focus on career development. We publish this newsletter, bringing the analysis of our writers to as wide an audience as possible. And we act as a bridge between the student population and the Durham Energy Institute (DEI), a group of interdisciplinary academics and professionals who play a role in informing energy policy. Through this relationship we operate a mentorship scheme between students and energy professionals, which is open to all regardless of background or prior involvement in energy.

To learn more about what we do and see how you can get involved, have a look at our social media pages through the Linktree in our bio, and follow us so you don’t miss out on any future opportunities.

Who am I?

I joined DUSES as a writer for the newsletter last year; I found it a great opportunity to hone my analytical writing skills and develop some (I hope!) in-depth knowledge about various energy topics.

My involvement in the society took me to policy conferences, on a geological field trip, and even to the Houses of Parliament! I think the society is an immensely valuable resource for students wanting to get involved in energy, and wanted to help its development by becoming President this year.

My native domain being physics, I have a particular interest in functional energy materials, and spent the last summer conducting research on organic photovoltaic devices with a group at the University of Oxford.
