A word from our Chief Editors
Welcome back to the December issue of the DUSES newsletter! This month’s theme is on COP30 in Belém.
So... COP30, eh? You're forgiven if you've forgotten already. This year it struggled to create any topics for discussion or outcomes that the public could engage with - our writers certainly felt the same during the creation of this month’s newsletter - largely because COP endeavours to continually get in its own way. Why insist on hosting it in a remote city scarce with suitable accommodation? Why are there over a thousand fossil fuel lobbyists at a conference about Climate Change??
Yet to me, COPs still remain important and, as Alexandra or Ved write about, meaningful agreements or initiatives can still come out of them - even if it takes a bit of digging to find them! But perhaps the time has come, as the prevalent theme in this month’s edition would suggest, for reflectance and introspection. Is it still fit for purpose? What needs to change come COP31?
So join COP in some soul-searching and enjoy reading this month’s articles from our incredible writing team! ~ Ollie
